Highway- This lane is in a poor state especially on the climb up from Cotter Riggs. A period of voluntary restraint has been recommended - for 6 months.

A little background on this lane: A Byway in both counties leading from Yorkshire Dales and into Cumbria from Hawes to Kirkby Stephen. A lot of history. Pendragon Casle stands guard at the top of the valley. Lady Anne Clifford repaired High Way in 1660 ! A very famous old highway used as a major route from Scotland into Yorkshire as a drove road from middle ages. There are old abandoned Inns along the way. Said to be badly damaged by trail bikes and no longer sustainable especially on the climb up from Cotter Riggs. One of the best long trail rides in the UK never mind the Dales. Will be the route of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail and thus at risk of TRO.

Thanks to Brian T. for the info.

Info from LDNP passed to us from Brian Thompson:

Garburn Pass can no longer be used by motorcycles. It had its mechanically propelled vehicle rights extinguished by the Natural Environmentand Rural Communities Act 2006 in May last year. For information on this and the other 30 routes that also had their mpv rights extinguished go to: http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/enjoying/outdoors/green_roads.htm

Gatescarth Pass is only open one day per month under a permit system operated by us. The background information on the permit system, how to apply and the dates of the open days can be found at: http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/enjoying/outdoors/green_roads/green_road_gatescarth.htm

NERC Bill. As of the 2nd of May the NERC bill is in force. This basically means we can only use Byways and UCRs and all the other rights of way we used to use are no longer legal. Also dual status lanes are downgraded to the lower status. Also the national park authorities are now able to close lanes without highway authority involvement. This all means any marked up maps you may have are now totally useless and you will need to see TRAC or the TRF to mark up new maps.

19 March 2006

TRAC members are requested to use voluntary restraint in not using a trail in the Lakes. The trail is known as Shap Old Road and is from 550 056 to 553 068. The trail is legal but we have been requested not to ride it by the LDNP. We need to try and show LDNP we are responsible. The trail will be lost post NERC anyway as it is dual status.

Article by Brian Thompson - our ROW consultant. For trail riders post NERC its a bit of a lottery where you can find all the lawful green lanes. In a few counties its a wipe out. Read more...

3 January 2006

TRAC member Ian O'Brien wrote to DEFRA recently asking for clarification about the likley commencement date for the NERC bill. To see the DEFRA response click here.

16 December 2005

All TRAC members are requested to try and get as many people to sign a petition to the Craven area committee of NYCC. Please spread the message as wide as possible, eg bike shops, people at events etc. A blank petition form is available here. The form can either be sent to the address at the bottom of the form or returned with your 2006 subs to TRAC. Please ensure any signatures are not silly ones as that would undermine our credability.

North Yorkshire Police have been warning riders caught riding a UCR that is closed by a TRO. While TRAC members are unlikley to use this trail, it is interesting to see the Police approach to the issue. See here for details. (Thanks to Brian Thompson and the TRF for this info)
